national Alpha Phi Alpha chapters about this new scholarship
opportunity -
the Casey Family Programs Male Seniors of Color Scholarship.
Casey Family Programs (www.casey.org) is a national non profit that
works
to provide and improve-and ultimately to prevent the need for-foster
care.
Established by United Parcel Service founder Jim Casey, we are a
Seattle-based national operating foundation that has served children,
youth,
and families in the child welfare system since 1966. We provide direct
services, and we promote advances in child-welfare practice and
policy. This
new college scholarship opportunity is an important part of our work
and we
need your help to inform potential applicants. All interested students
should contact the Orphan Foundation of American (OFA) at
www.orphan.org.
The OFA is administering this program nationally (see their web site
below).

This scholarship opportunity is targeted at seniors as we know they
often
struggle to complete their education due to financial hardship -
including

The Orphan Foundation of America is pleased
to announce a new, one-time-only
Casey Family Scholarships
opportunity for
Male Students of Color
in
Post-Secondary Education
Applicants must:
* Verify their status as having aged out of the US foster care
system
* Be graduating in good standing from an accredited vocational or
technical training program, college or university in 2005
This nonrenewable scholarship of up to $5000 is available to minority
male
students as commendation for their ambition and tenacity in pursuing a
higher education. Awards will be made based on a combination of need
and
merit, and checks will be disbursed starting October 1, 2004 until the
scholarship fund is expended.
Application instructions:
All three parts must be received by OFA in order to consider your
application.
1. Complete the online application:

2. The following documentation must be sent via US mail to our office:
* Verification of your foster care status. This can be court
papers
or a letter on official letterhead from a former caseworker or
authorized
staff member at your foster care agency or social services department.
* Documentation of your total outstanding federal loan amount

out from www.nslds.ed.gov <http://www.nslds.ed.gov/> . To get a pin
number
go to https://pin.ed.gov <https://pin.ed.gov/> .
* Documentation from your school regarding any outstanding
tuition
balance you have at the present time.

3. Essay question - this must be emailed as a WORD attachment to
scholarships at orphan.org.
You must submit a well-formulated, college-level essay five paragraphs
in
length answering the following questions:
What is the single most important thing your post-secondary education
has
taught you?
How will you take this lesson and apply it to your professional and
personal
life to help ensure your future success?
