The distinguished men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity – Eta Epsilon Lambda Chapter were recipients of the Golden Image Award (GIA) at the 3rd Annual Golden Image Awards Program held at the Executive Pavilion on Saturday, July 20th in honor of Her Excellency President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

According to Honorable Augustine Ngafuan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Liberia, the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity was unanimously selected by the National Committee following a thorough research and vetting of organizations that were submitted for scrutiny. The committee members were captivated by the stellar leadership, service and empowerment projects undertaken by the men of Alpha Phi Alpha.

This prestigious and upscale event was attended by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Vice President Joseph N. Boakai, U.S. Ambassador Deborah R. Malac, Vice President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Dr. Toga McIntosh and a host of national and international dignitaries.

Eta Epsilon Lambda Chapter raised $21,500.00 for scholarship and educational programs between 2012 and 2013. The funds benefited 114 junior and senior high school students in Montserrado and surrounding counties. As a way of promoting technology in Liberia, Alpha Phi Alpha established the Aaron B. Milton Engineering Scholarship at the University of Liberia. The fraternity has also commenced mentoring partnerships with the YMCA of Liberia through its Subject-to-Citizen (S2C) program and Ricks Institute through its Servant Leadership Program.

Recently, Alpha Phi Alpha proudly and resolutely joined the Ministry of Gender and Development, the Gender-Based Taskforce, and the leadership of the Republic of Liberia in the fight against sexual assault and rape perpetuated against women and children.

On February 15, 2013, seven medical doctors, all members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, arrived in Liberia from the United States with the sole purpose of serving humanity by providing free surgical care and other medical services to Liberians in Monrovia and other counties. Alpha Brother Dr. Rahn Kennedy Baily, President of the National Medical Association (NMA) of the United States led the delegation to Liberia. The distinguished Alpha Doctors made daily rounds at J.F.K. Hospital, Redemption Hospital, Jackson F. Doe, Sr. Memorial Hospital, ELWA and other medical facilities in and out of the capital. The group pledged to collaborate with members of the Liberian Medical community in providing quality medical care for Liberians. The group is also planning to build a second medical college in Liberia.

On December 8, 2012 the Eta Epsilon Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha hosted a five hour Christmas party for approximately 1,200 children in the West Point Township. The Alpha brothers served the children and provided educational and fun gifts throughout the day.


The first African chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity was established in Monrovia, Liberia on October 6, 1958. David N. Howell, former CEO of the Liberia YMCA along with 17 Alpha brothers was designated by the international leadership to establish Eta Epsilon Lambda chapter in Monrovia.
Men of Alpha are tenacious, scholarly, versatile, dependable and gentlemanly. A few of Liberia’s past and present Alpha men are Liberia’s first veterinarian Dr. Christian Baker, Vice President of Liberia, Joseph N. Boakai, former Minister of Information G. Henry Andrews, Agronomist Dr. McKinley, A. Deshield, Jr., Former Dean of the School of Agriculture, member of the 53rd House of Representatives, Prince Moye, Liberia’s Fastest Man and Olympian Sayon Cooper, Bishop of the AME Church, David Daniels, Historian Emmanuel Bowier and Cuttington University President Dr. Henrique Tokpa.
